“There’s power in feeling your own body and making it move how you want to move” - Casey Chong in Strength
A pillar of #TheMaddieWay is physical movement. My body has made it crystal clear that if I don't move, it's only a matter of time before I lose it. Clarity, digestion, a sense of peace? All out the window.
These images are from my video on finding my strength through fitness. As a woman recovering from injuries, my video explores how working out in a gym has been a source of both strength and stress. While I’m proud of how far I’ve come lifting, the feeling of being observed is omnipresent.
In the context of the Covid-19 Pandemic, attending a gym is no longer an option. Instead, I’ve immersed myself in workout videos. These are effective at making me sore in a way that doesn’t aggravate existing injuries and dispenses the exhausting masculine gaze at gyms. Plus, working out “with” a trainer in the videos helps my digestion and hones in my focus for the whole day of working and living from home.
Below are my tried-and-true, quarantine-friendly, free fitness classes. So get on the mat, shift the energy of your whole day, and stay safe!
I get frustrated when I want a workout, but feel like I've just stretched for an hour. Core Power Yoga incorporates HIIT, optional weights, and cardio within yoga. I love that you can choose how intense you want the workout to be based on the description. The classes get the heart pumping, but are suitable for those with injuries, like me.
With almost six thousand people joining, the IG live classes of this Sweat Spot dance studio instructor are the biggest dance party I've joined! You'll strut, you'll sweat, you'll take up space! Couldn't recommend more.
She's mad cute, her workouts are fun, and her name is Maddie! What more could you want? I especially recommend song-length workouts, where she incorporate viral TikTok moves into popular pop and hip hop songs. It's fun and distracting from all the squats. . .
The absolutley jacked instructor Kira Stokes' pilates and HIIT workouts can be found through the Instagrams of her celebrity clients, like Ashley Graham and Candace Cameron Bure, and Hannah Bronfman.
Adriene is a funny gem of a yoga instructor who is as quick to make fun of herself as she is to give you a life-changing tip on form.
The tempo of her flows lean on the slower side, but she can ramp it up, too. I gravitate to her videos titled “HIIT,” “Weightloss,” or “Cardio,” to get more heart-pumping poses. Her quotes during closing shivasana (corpse pose) are gold.
This is a cache of at-home workouts curated by Lululemon and Greatist. Most do not need weights and are quite short, like "7-Minute Abs without Equipment" or "At-home Barre." Just make sure you don't get sucked into the Pinterest procrastination vortex!
Cassey will make you sore and make you laugh. She's peppy and has incredible production value to her videos, but more importantly embraces form and body positivity. I recommended her Bridal Bootcamp series, which would have been more aptly named the Brutal Bootcamp series.
Alo Yoga’s Youtube channel is a gem! The flows are excellent and diverse, from the tone of the instructors to the intensity of the poses. This is the channel I got to when I want to learn a new pose. The instructors are some of the best.
This is a to-the-point flow that gets your heart pumping. I often use it as a warmup, whether for other workouts like HIIT or to literally warm up in my cold house.
