MadWa Smoothie Bowl

Pro tip: chew your smoothies to prevent bloat.

After trial and error, plus a short stint working at a smoothie joint in Seattle, I think I cracked the code on a smoothie that balances healthy and sweet without the bloat or sugar-crash.

Subjective Specifics, Smoothie Edition:

  • First, they've got to be slightly-sweet liquid salads, not milkshakes. This is a meal, not a run through Dick's (Seattle in the house, hello!).

  • Secondly, I need to chew them. I eat my smoothies with a spoon because this prevents head freezes, bloating, and wondering where tf your smoothie went after 5 minutes.

  • Thirdly, every recipe of The Maddie Way is going to be sustainable. Old or bruised fruit or avocados about to keel over? Chop, freeze, smoothie. The tough stems from beet or kale greens? Chop, freeze, smoothie. They add bulk and reduce waste. If you've got it, flaunt it.

  • Just don't add too many different things because, fourth, simplicity goes a long way in a smoothie.

  • Fifth, because smoothies are a cold meal, you need warming elements. Every smoothie I make has heat-building ginger root or powder and cinnamon.

MadWa Smoothie Bowl

  • ¼ to ½ cup cold water

  • 2 cups chopped kale or spinach, including stems (or sub any green on hand)

  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon

  • 1 teaspoon spirulina (optional)

  • 1 pinch sea salt

  • Large nub ginger root, scrubbed but unpeeled

  • ½ cup frozen berries

  • 1 banana, peeled, halved, and frozen

  • ½ small avocado, peeled and frozen

  • 1 teaspoon chia seeds

  • 1 teaspoon goji berries

  • 1 tablespoon coconut, unsweetened and toasted

Pro tip, in order to make it verrry thick, add the frozen ingredients away from the blades. So, in a standard blender, add the following in order: water, kale, cinnamon, salt, spirulina, ginger, berries, banana, and avocado. In a Bullet blender, add the following in order: avocado, banana, berries, ginger, salt, spirulina, cinnamon, kale, and water.

Pulse a few times, scraping the sides as needed. Blend until thick, smooth, and dark green. Top with chia seeds, goji berries, and toasted coconut, and eat with a spoon!
